Project
Overview
Imagine an app designed to help senior citizens navigate their daily tasks effortlessly—managing medications, staying connected, and accessing health records with ease. I took on the mission to transform complex, inaccessible designs into something intuitive and empowering. Through conducting interviews, analyzing data, and running usability tests, I uncovered the real challenges seniors face with digital tools. From crafting oversized icons to integrating voice navigation, I ensured every feature was tailored for simplicity and independence. Technology can truly include everyone—this app is proof of that.
Guided by the Hero’s Journey storytelling format, I embarked on a UX quest for a healthcare app—uncovering insights, solving problems, and delivering seamless user experiences. Curious to learn more? Let’s explore!
The Call to Adventure
Identifying a Problem Worth Solving
When the pandemic struck, senior citizens—a vulnerable demographic—were forced to remain confined to their homes. This isolation upended their daily routines, cutting them off from essential services, social connections, and cherished hobbies. Recognizing the emotional and practical challenges they faced, I embarked on a mission to design an app that would reconnect senior citizens with the world they had lost.

Meeting the Mentor
Primary Research
I began by immersing myself in their experiences through primary research. In-depth interviews and empathy mapping helped me uncover key pain points:
-
Challenges in accessing essential services like groceries and medicines.
-
A profound sense of loneliness caused by limited social interaction.
-
Difficulty adapting to digital tools with complex interfaces.
The voices of senior citizens became my guiding compass, inspiring me to design a solution that was simple, intuitive, and deeply empathetic.
Crossing the Threshold
Quantitative Research
I conducted quantitative surveys to validate and prioritize the identified issues effectively.
Data insights revealed:
-
85% of senior citizens struggled with existing app interfaces.
-
70% expressed the need for a consolidated platform for essential services and social engagement.
-
90% preferred large, readable fonts and voice-guided navigation.
These insights reinforced my determination to create a platform that truly addressed their unique needs.

Tests & Allies
Information Architecture and User Flow
To ensure seamless navigation, I designed an information architecture specifically tailored to seniors. Key features included:
-
Home Page: Quick access to essential services like groceries, medicines, and doctor consultations.
-
Community: A space for virtual meetups and interactions with friends and family.
-
Leisure: Easy access to hobbies like music, reading, and online games.
The user flow was designed with simplicity at its core. Each journey—from booking groceries to joining a virtual yoga session—required minimal steps and provided clear guidance at every stage.

The Reward
Visual Design
The visual design embodied simplicity and warmth. Key highlights:
-
Large, legible fonts to enhance readability.
-
High-contrast colors to cater to those with visual impairments.
-
Friendly illustrations to make the app inviting and approachable.
Each design decision was driven by the goal of creating a delightful experience tailored for senior citizens.

The Trial
Usability Testing
I conducted usability testing with a diverse group of senior citizens. Observing them interact with the prototype provided valuable insights:
-
Positive feedback on large touch targets and voice instructions.
-
Confusion regarding certain icons, leading us to replace them with labels.
-
Requests for a ‘Help’ feature, resulting in the addition of a support button with one-tap access to assistance.
The Turning Point
A Prototype That Redefines Senior Living

Medicine
The medicine flow ensures seniors never miss a dose. From easy reminders to seamless reordering, every step is designed to simplify their health routine. Imagine a system that not only organizes but empowers—keeping wellness just a tap away!

Reminder
The reminder flow is your personal assistant, ensuring you never forget important tasks. With intuitive prompts and effortless scheduling, it adapts to your needs seamlessly. Imagine a tool that keeps you on track, so you can focus on what truly matters!

Engage
The engage flow brings seniors closer to their loved ones and interests. With easy ways to connect, share, and explore, it turns everyday moments into meaningful experiences. Imagine a world where technology fosters joy and connection effortlessly!

Tab Bar
The tab bar is your gateway to simplicity—search with ease using the magnify option, stay updated and inspired through feeds, and connect instantly with loved ones via chat. Everything you need is just a tap away, making interactions effortless and enjoyable!

The Wisdom Gained
Learnings from the Senior Citizen App Journey

Empathy Drives Innovation: Understanding senior citizens' struggles led to intuitive solutions.
-
Simplicity is Key: Clear labels, large touch targets, and voice guidance are essential for inclusivity.
-
Iterate for Impact: Testing and tweaks, like adding a ‘Help’ button, ensured meaningful experiences.
-
Accessibility Equals Independence: The design restored autonomy and confidence for seniors.
-
Design Evolves: Feedback and updates keep the app aligned with users' needs.
Takeaway:"The true treasure of this journey wasn’t just the app—it was the empowerment, connection, and confidence it brought to its users."
